Since the British first settled here, they had always yearn for respite from the depressing heat. They set their sight on the highest peak in Penang i. e. Penang Hill or locally known as Bukit Bendera. They built railway up the hill and bungalows for retreat during weekend. During the British era the Chinese and other races flourished and thrived. They practiced their religion steadfastly and built many temples that rivaled those in China if not better! There is a saying in Penang - you have not been to Penang if you have not been to Penang Hill and Kek Lok Si. The Chinese built more and more temples which some are grander than those in China. At the same time, Siamese and Burmese built Buddhist temples, the Malay built mosques and the Indians built Hindu temples on gifted land from Queen Victoria while the Europeans built churches. At Kapitan Keling Road, the locals called it Street of Harmony, there are 5 majestic religious buildings within vicinity of each others in a stretch of 500 meter.
